Kanye’s collaboration with Adidas has been one of the hottest talked about topics lately. ‘Fashion week’ across the globe is exploding with catwalk praise, yet my attention has been hooked to Kanye’s latest collaboration with Adidas. It seems as though his collection has received the mirrored reception as Marmite. Some love it, others hate it or should I say don’t quite understand it. I can’t say I initially understood the vision behind the line myself, but I definitely grew to like it with time.
While critics believe the sweatshirts and other items suite that of a trendy hobo, I quite like the oversized distressed jumpers, footwear and sheer material. I’m a lover of ‘simple’ which is exactly what this project projected. Although simple is thought of as easy, I believe it to be quite daring and difficult to achieve. It’s so easy to over exaggerate and design, which is often executed by some designers and can be quite off putting. Instead, Kanye’s done the complete opposite and claims to want people to feel like awesome is achievable.
Something I found enlightening and interesting about his show was the incorporation of all racial profiles and body types. I loved viewing a range of races, cultures and body shapes that portrayed equality and stood as art.
In a few of Kanye’s latest interviews with different media platforms and organisations he’s mentioned the idea of breaking through the concept of classism and racism with hope to demolish separatism. He also mentions the importance of concentrating on time we have in relation to such issues, which I found to be delivered fantastically and is something we all need to hear.
As for the tone of the collection, I absolutely adored the neutral colour palette of khaki green, grey, tan, olive, black and taupe. I’ve been obsessed with these colours throughout this years winter and thought he served them justice.
Of course it doesn’t just stop there with a talented and creative Mr West. The shows presentation was key and just as important as the collection itself. Unlike your normal fashion runway show. Models were positioned and displayed the collection row by row to the sound of a horn and set lighting. It was new. It was refreshing. It was brilliant. Towards the very ending of the show, Kanye walked through the centre of each row to stand at the front of what looked like an army, which I thought to be well metaphorically played.
His newly designed sneaker (Yeezy Boost) has also been a talk of the town amongst the collection, which I immediately liked when I first saw it. I’m not a huge fan of trainers, but I am a lover of comfort which I believe these offer as well as a fashionable look. They are of course different to the Yeezy I and II and offer a more high fashion look, with its design and material choice such as suede.
Overall, I’d say a job well done with this collection. Go Yeezy.
