A NIGHT WITH ERYKAH BADU

7 July 2017

Ok so check this out, I’ve been waiting for this day for MY ENTIRE LIFE! Anybody who knows me well will know that Erykah Badu is one of my favourite artists. A legend. An Icon. A Queen. Healer. Teacher. I could go on till the end of time.

It was creeping close to the point in having to book a flight to the states to see her perform live, but thankfully she brought her captivating soulful show to the UK to give us ’20 Years of Baduizm” last night!

There are not many musical artists in the world of today, who move me with their soulful presence and artistry. There’s something incredibly refreshing about her work, which leaves you at peace and radiates warmth.

Not only is she highly intelligent, spiritual, talented and a Doula (assists mothers during labour) she’s got a great sense of humour and character, which makes me love her that much more.

Erykah is also known as, "Medulla Oblongata, Sarra Bellum, Annie, Maria Mexico, Lo Down Loretta Brown, Analog Girl in a Digital World, She ILL etc” Although having made her mark in the late 90s she is still as relevant today as she was at her primary stage. Not wishing to be placed in a box with reference to her music career, she has often been labelled as a ‘Neo-soul Queen’. While this doesn’t necessarily matter to her as she is open to all sounds, I believe it is a title well deserved.

Starting out as a theatre major and in the know that a career in music or art would eventually take place one day, it wasn’t long before she wrote her first song ‘Apple Tree’ and was recognised by D’Angelo’s manager Kedar Massenburg. What strengthened her journey then and now is the understanding and gratitude of her sound and style, which doesn’t sound or look like anything trending.

Doors to the show opened at 7pm and ran through till about 11, covering songs such as “I Want You, On & On, Hello, Love of My Life, Apple Tree” and many other classics!

Inspired by her style, I wore my grandmother’s scalf as a head wrap with enormous hoops.

A night to be remembered!
