A SEAT AT THE TABLE

4 October 2016

I haven’t done an album review in quite a while, because to be honest, I haven’t been moved of an artist’s project for quite some time. Music nowadays often lacks the authenticity we used to receive in the 90’s and many years before this era.

When Solange Knowles’s album emerged on the scene this past Friday I stopped everything I was doing.

There. Is. Nothing. More. Important. In. Music. Than. This. Album. Right. Now.

Solange teased us up to the release of her work, posting fantastic visual shots to her instagram, which represented this project, showing us how great of a visual artist she is amongst many things.

I’ve always been a fan and very respectful of Solange for her character, work ethic and outspoken ways. While I don’t personally know her, I’ve always felt that she’s had a kind, loving and genuine soul, which has always drawn me to her.

This album is nothing but the black empowering piece we’ve all been waiting for, the healing of souls, minds and wounds, the joy in awareness and point blank expressions boldly spoken to sooth our spirits.

Each song takes us through a sense of encouragement and uplifting sensations, from speaking on celebrating being black, while explaining that black power is not in any form anti-white, but pro-black - celebration of skin tone, culture and life experience.

There is so much being said and portrayed visually, which directly addresses the struggle and experience of being a black human being, living in a world, which is not acceptive of such race.

The album’s focal points Black culture, people and emotions, offering bold meditation and poetry. With all the events which have occurred over the many years, whereby black people have been oppressed, this album could not have been introduced at a better time.

“If you don’t understand us and what we’ve been through then you probably don’t understand what this moment is about. This is home.” - This Moment Interlude #ASATT

I couldn’t be any more proud and appreciative of such a masterpiece. Something that’s not just music, but so much more. Something that can touch the world and help heal those who have been broken from injustice.

Thank you Solange Knowles, for making this “for us by us”. I am truly emotionally appreciative and grateful. xo
