Check it out. Three months into the year and guess who is tired of London. Me. How to solve this problem?.....Get yourself on a plane. Anywhere, but here.
What better time to disappear and bask into the first quarter of the year. For once in my life I planned to pack light. Challenge set!
How many of us see a suitcase and attempt to pack our entire life into it. *Raises right hand* You should see me, I start off well and before you know it there is a ton of outfits, random items and an unnecessary amount of shoes packed together like sardines. Epic fail.
I have an aunt who is the queen of packing. We went to Portugal together once and she brought along a suitcase the size of an average tote bag, somehow managing to fit in all the essentials that a woman needs. So when I thought of packing for my trip, I was aiming for just that.
Here’s how it went:
Essentials |
Every time I plan a trip out of the country, I stand before my suitcase thinking where on earth do I start. I’ve probably spent more time starring at it then packing into it.
I started with a list, separating, hair & make up, accessories, clothes, shoes, cleansing materials, important documents, gadgets, followed by throwing out anything that looked like extra baggage.
As a shoe lover, I made the decision to pack only two pairs of shoes! This is a miracle move for me people. I stuck to my trustworthy Stan Smith’s, and a pair of court heels.
Picking a pair of shoes which can be worn throughout your trip with anything you throw on, will help create more space to pack with ease and build your outfits for each day.
Here’s a few tricks to being a lightly packed globetrotter:
- I find writing things down and visually seeing something in front of you clears the mind a little. From a list it’s easier to cut out anything that is of unnecessary weight.
- Scrap the neat 3 - 5 crease folding and say hello to laying your items flat out or rolling them, which will maximise space.
- Stick to 2-3 pairs of shoes if you can (shoes can easily take up quite a lot of space)
- Think backpacker!
- You don’t need that. Or that. Or that either (repeat it to yourself while packing).
- Pack with value, selecting items which can function in a number of ways is always a good idea.
- If all else fails, wearing does not count as carrying. Stuff your pockets and wear those boots that don’t fit into your case.
Wishing those of you who are currently travelling or planning your trips abroad this spring a great time and a light packing experience.
Until next time folks..xx
